Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Azure, a winged pheon Argent, within a bordure Gyronny of sixteen Sable and Argent.  Attached below the shield and on each side a tripartite Blue scroll inscribed "FIDELITY FRATERNITY VERACITY" in Silver letters.

Symbolism
Ultramarine blue is associated with Aviation units.  Blue is symbolic of devotion, loyalty and truth and recalls the sky, the unit's theater of operations.  The winged pheon represents attack capabilities, swiftness and sureness in flight of aircraft.  The wings reaching upward, allude to the mobility of an attack helicopter.  The black and white of the radiating bordure symbolize night and day operations, the fraternity of the unit's members and suggest the whirling blades of a helicopter.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 10 May 1989.

That for the regiments and separate battalions of the Nevada Army National Guard:  On a wreath of the colors Argent and Azure, within a garland of sagebrush a sledge hammer and miner's drill crossed in saltire behind a pickax in pale Proper.
